Safe, licensed asbestos testing, removal and remediation in Wollongong
Despite the fact that asbestos has been banned in Australia for more than 20 years, it continues to pose an ongoing problem, particularly in Wollongong.
Asbestos was widely used in the construction industry in the second half of the 20th century, which coincides with the residential building boom that occurred in Wollongong during the same period. As a result, many of the homes that were built after 1945 and all the way up to 2000 still contain asbestos materials. Asbestos may be present in walls, ceilings, pipes, insulation and just about anywhere else around the house.
If your home or property was constructed any time between 1945 and 2000 in Wollongong, there’s a strong chance that asbestos materials were used in some capacity. Don’t risk it, call Gallant Contracting today to arrange an inspection and quote at your property.
How do I know if my property contains asbestos?
Asbestos has no distinct smell or appearance, which makes it almost impossible to identify by sight or smell alone.
Throughout the second half of the 20th century, a large number of commercial and residential properties constructed in and around Wollongong used asbestos materials in some capacity, whether that was in insulation, floors, roofing, pipes, tiles or anywhere else around the property. The use of asbestos was widespread.
Asbestos materials aren’t just found inside your home or commercial property. They may also be in old garages, sheds, external laundries, external toilets, dog kennels and even external fencing. If your building was constructed before 2000, there’s a good chance that asbestos may be present.
When you’re renovating or removing old structures from your property, it’s important to either call a licensed asbestos testing professional or assume that asbestos is present and go straight to getting the material removed.
Penalties for unsafe asbestos handling and removal in New South Wales are significant, and the material continues to pose a danger to your health and the health of those around you. Don’t take the risk. Call Gallant Contracting today for all your asbestos testing, removal and remediation needs in Wollongong.

Our Case Studies
Asbestos Removal | Friable Removal on an Active Demolition Site, Cowra
Case Study Details
The Project
Gallant was engaged as licensed asbestos removalist on the demolition of the former Cowra hospital in the NSW Central West. Works ran across a twelve week programme on an active demolition site, with hazardous materials to be stripped out ahead of the demolition front on a programme that could not slip.
The Scope
Friable asbestos pipe lagging was stripped from ceilings and service risers throughout the decommissioned buildings, with every ceiling void treated as contaminated and enclosed accordingly. Licensed asbestos removal supervisors and removalists were held on site for the full duration of the programme, working in sequence with the demolition contractor so that each structure was released hazmat free before machines moved in. The engagement was later extended by variation to include lead paint removal to the western stairwell. With Cowra five hours from Gallant’s Sydney base, crews were mobilised with accommodation for the entire programme rather than commuting to a regional job.
The Precaution Measures
All works were carried out under Gallant’s NSW Class A friable asbestos removal licence (AD214704) and ISO 45001 certified safety management system. Daily records and site documentation were submitted for the principal contractor’s approval, independent clearance was obtained before each area was released to the demolition contractor, and all asbestos waste was disposed of through licensed facilities with full tracking. Exclusion zones and access controls were coordinated daily with the principal contractor to keep removal crews and demolition plant separated on a live site.
The Outcome
Twelve weeks delivered without delay to the head contractor’s works. Buildings were cleared and certified progressively, each one released hazmat free and ready to demolish, so the demolition front never stopped waiting on hazmat clearance.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is asbestos?
Asbestos is a group of naturally occurring fibrous minerals that was widely used as a building material in Australia in the second half of the 20th century, from 1945 all the way up until it was banned in 2003.
Asbestos was a cheap and widely accessible building material used in a range of different applications, including insulation, roofing, tiles, flooring, pipes and just about anywhere else you can imagine.
Despite the fact that asbestos has been banned in Australia for more than 20 years, it continues to pose an ongoing threat to property owners, particularly those looking to demolish, renovate or remove old materials from their property.
How common is asbestos in Wollongong?
Asbestos is unfortunately very common in Wollongong, due to the fact that Australia’s widespread adoption of asbestos in the building industry occurred at the same time as Wollongong’s housing boom in the second half of the 20th century.
Many of the homes and commercial properties that were constructed in and around Wollongong contain asbestos materials in some capacity. Some of the most common places include ceilings, insulation, pipes, tiles and flooring. If your home or property was constructed any time between 1945 and 2003, there’s a strong possibility that asbestos was used in its construction.
Can I remove asbestos myself?
Removing any quantity of asbestos, whether it’s friable or non-friable, is dangerous. In New South Wales, you’re permitted to remove a maximum of 10 square metres of bonded, non-friable asbestos material (Class B). For anything over 10 square metres, or for all friable asbestos materials, you must hire a qualified asbestos removalist with a valid SafeWork NSW licence.
Can non-friable (Class B) asbestos become friable?
Yes, non-friable (bonded) asbestos materials can become friable if they’re disturbed, which is a well-documented risk when renovating, demolishing or removing any materials from a property.
Any direct impact, such as drilling, cutting or crushing, can immediately turn non-friable asbestos into friable asbestos, making it an immediate health risk for anyone in the property or the surrounding vicinity.
Non-friable asbestos (Class B) is still treated as a serious health risk, which is why it requires extreme care, and why there are limits on the amount that can be removed.
