Asbestos is inherently varied in its appearance and where it is found. There is no simple way to discern asbestos materials by colour, smell, or appearance on its own. Materials which may appear to be harmless can contain asbestos and pose a real risk during and after construction.  

Asbestos materials were used so widely in construction in Sydney and across Australia in the second half 20th Century that they can be found in just about every room of the house. From tiles to textured ceilings, insulations, cladding and even as bonding materials. Without professional testing, there is no safe way to know that you are dealing with asbestos.

Asbestos Removal | Friable Removal on an Active Demolition Site, Cowra

The Project

Gallant was engaged as licensed asbestos removalist on the demolition of the former Cowra hospital in the NSW Central West. Works ran across a twelve week programme on an active demolition site, with hazardous materials to be stripped out ahead of the demolition front on a programme that could not slip.

The Scope

Friable asbestos pipe lagging was stripped from ceilings and service risers throughout the decommissioned buildings, with every ceiling void treated as contaminated and enclosed accordingly. Licensed asbestos removal supervisors and removalists were held on site for the full duration of the programme, working in sequence with the demolition contractor so that each structure was released hazmat free before machines moved in. The engagement was later extended by variation to include lead paint removal to the western stairwell. With Cowra five hours from Gallant’s Sydney base, crews were mobilised with accommodation for the entire programme rather than commuting to a regional job.

The Precaution Measures

All works were carried out under Gallant’s NSW Class A friable asbestos removal licence (AD214704) and ISO 45001 certified safety management system. Daily records and site documentation were submitted for the principal contractor’s approval, independent clearance was obtained before each area was released to the demolition contractor, and all asbestos waste was disposed of through licensed facilities with full tracking. Exclusion zones and access controls were coordinated daily with the principal contractor to keep removal crews and demolition plant separated on a live site.

The Outcome

Twelve weeks delivered without delay to the head contractor’s works. Buildings were cleared and certified progressively, each one released hazmat free and ready to demolish, so the demolition front never stopped waiting on hazmat clearance.
