Addressing the Ongoing Risks of Hazardous Materials

Hazardous materials pose an ongoing risk in both commercial and residential settings in Australia. A lot of what went into construction of factories, infrastructure and homes during the second half of the 20th century is now classed as hazardous, including:

  • Lead-based paint
  • Synthetic mineral fibres
  • PCBs in old electrical gear
  • Accumulated lead dust
  • Mercury in switches, tubes and instruments
  • Fire retardant treatments

Many of these things seemed sensible at the time, but with hindsight we now know just how damaging these practices can be. Things like crystalline silica are not a legacy issue, but a live one any time concrete, brick, stone or tile gets cut or broken up. None of it behaves the same way. Lead dust is one problem; PCBs in a transformer are a completely different one. Each material has its own exposure pathway, its own controls, its own disposal pathway.

Gallant Contracting is family-owned and family-run hazardous waste remediation company. Working across Sydney, Wollongong, Newcastle, the Central Coast and Canberra, with more than 30 years of combined experience across asbestos, hazardous materials and remediation.

We work on commercial, industrial, and residential sites to identify and assess what’s there, and design the controls and removal methodology around the specific materials and the specific site. Samples go to NATA-accredited labs. Air and exposure monitoring is set up where it’s required (and sometimes where it isn’t, if we think it’s warranted). Removal is carried out under those controls, waste goes to licensed EPA facilities, and the site is handed back clean.

We handle the entire process from start to finish. From the first inspection to the final clearance, it’s the same team.

Hazardous Materials Remediation | Heritage Lead Paint and Asbestos, Green Cape Lighthouse

The Project

Gallant was engaged to deliver lead paint make safe remediation and asbestos removal across the Head and Assistant Keepers’ Dwellings at Green Cape Lighthouse, a remote heritage site in Beowa National Park on the NSW Far South Coast. Won through open government tender, works were delivered to AS/NZS 4361.2:2017 under Heritage NSW exemption requirements ahead of a re-roofing programme.

The Scope

A crew of six mobilised for a six week programme covering roughly 600 m² of lead containing surfaces. Wet scraping and HEPA controlled removal inside and out, roof cavity remediation with certified encapsulant, removal of contaminated insulation and asbestos ceiling battens, and remediation of surface soil around the buildings. When asbestos was found in the Powerhouse generator room and lead extended into the Stables, both were priced and delivered under the same engagement.

The Precaution Measures

Exclusion zones and full containment were established throughout, with Property Risk Australia providing independent air monitoring and clearance. With no local disposal option available, all contaminated waste was double wrapped, sealed on site and transported by covered vehicle out of the national park to licensed facilities with full tracking.

The Outcome

Delivered with the heritage fabric preserved and the roof cavities released early so the follow-on roofing contractor could start on programme, with every extension to scope absorbed inside the same engagement rather than sent back to tender.
